Prominent Ears

Prominent Ears

Prominent ears (sometimes called “bat ears” or “protruding ears”) are a common condition where the ears stick out more than usual from the side of the head. This often happens because of differences in the natural folds of the ear cartilage or extra cartilage growth. While it does not affect hearing or health, prominent ears can cause self-consciousness or teasing, especially in children.

The surgical treatment for this is called otoplasty (ear reshaping surgery). It is usually performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the age of the patient. The surgeon makes an incision behind the ear, reshapes or folds the cartilage, and secures it with permanent stitches to bring the ears closer to the head. Recovery is generally quick, with swelling and mild discomfort lasting about 1–2 weeks. A protective bandage or headband is often worn to support the new ear shape during healing.

The best point about correcting prominent ears is that the results are permanent, natural-looking, and can greatly improve self-confidence, especially in children who may face teasing in school.
