Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic and sometimes functional procedure that improves the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids. It involves removing or repositioning excess skin, fat, and occasionally muscle to correct drooping upper lids or under-eye bags. There are different approaches: upper eyelid blepharoplasty is performed along the natural crease to lift heavy or hooded lids, while lower eyelid surgery can be done just beneath the lash line or from inside the eyelid (transconjunctival) to address puffiness without leaving an external scar. People seek blepharoplasty for both aesthetic reasons—to look younger, less tired, and more refreshed—and functional reasons, such as improving vision that is obstructed by sagging upper lids.

Good candidates are generally healthy individuals with realistic expectations who are concerned about excess eyelid skin, puffiness, or drooping. The procedure begins with a detailed evaluation of eye health and vision, followed by carefully placed incisions to remove or adjust tissues. Recovery typically involves bruising, swelling, and mild discomfort in the first week, with many patients resuming work in 7–10 days. Most swelling resolves within a few weeks, and final results become visible in 2–3 months as scars fade and eyelid contours settle. Risks, while rare, include infection, dry eyes, scarring, asymmetry, or changes in eyelid position. In extremely rare cases, more serious complications such as vision loss can occur.

Results from blepharoplasty are long-lasting, often lasting many years, although the natural aging process continues. Upper eyelid results may last a lifetime for some, while lower lid improvements are usually permanent. Choosing a highly skilled, board-certified plastic or oculoplastic surgeon is critical to achieving natural-looking results and minimizing complications. Overall, blepharoplasty is considered a safe and effective surgery that can dramatically enhance both appearance and, in some cases, visual function.
