Burn Reconstruction

Burn Reconstruction

Burn reconstruction is a specialized area of plastic and reconstructive surgery focused on improving both the function and appearance of areas affected by burn injuries. Severe burns can damage not only the skin but also deeper tissues like muscles, tendons, and joints, often leaving behind scars, contractures (tightened skin that limits movement), and disfigurement. Burn reconstruction aims to restore mobility, reduce pain, and improve cosmetic outcomes, helping patients regain both physical ability and self-confidence.

Reconstructive approaches vary depending on the severity and stage of healing. In the acute phase (immediately after a burn), surgical procedures such as skin grafts (transplanting healthy skin from another area of the body) or skin substitutes may be used to close large wounds and prevent infection. In the long-term phase, procedures focus on scar management and functional restoration. These include scar release with skin grafting, local or regional flaps (moving nearby tissue to cover a defect), and free tissue transfer (microsurgery) for large or complex areas. Techniques like tissue expansion, Z-plasty, and laser treatments may also be used to improve flexibility and reduce scar thickness or discoloration.

Burn reconstruction is rarely a single operation; instead, it often requires multiple staged surgeries over months or years, combined with rehabilitation therapy, splinting, and sometimes psychological support. The overall goal is not just cosmetic improvement but also restoring the ability to perform everyday tasks and improving quality of life. Risks include infection, graft or flap failure, poor wound healing, and the possibility of additional scarring, making long-term follow-up and multidisciplinary care essential.
