Face Lift

Face Lift

A facelift (medically called rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure designed to reduce visible signs of aging in the face and neck by lifting and tightening underlying tissues and removing excess skin. It primarily addresses sagging cheeks, deep folds around the mouth and nose, jowls, and loose skin on the jawline or neck. During the procedure, a surgeon makes incisions around the hairline and ears, repositions and tightens the deeper layers of the face (the SMAS layer), and then trims and redrapes the skin for a smoother, more youthful appearance. In some cases, a neck lift is performed simultaneously to enhance results.

Unlike non-surgical treatments such as fillers or thread lifts, a facelift provides the most dramatic and long-lasting rejuvenation, with results often lasting 7–10 years or more. However, it is a major surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia or deep sedation, requiring a recovery period of about 2–4 weeks, with swelling, bruising, and tightness gradually improving over time. Scars are usually well-hidden in the hairline and around the ears.

Facelifts are most effective for people in their 40s to 70s who have moderate to severe skin laxity and are in good overall health. Risks, as with any surgery, include infection, bleeding, hematoma (blood pooling under the skin), nerve injury (which may cause temporary or rarely permanent facial weakness), scarring, or asymmetry. Choosing a board-certified and experienced plastic surgeon significantly reduces these risks and ensures natural-looking results.
