Fat grafting, also called fat transfer or lipofilling, is a cosmetic and reconstructive procedure where fat is taken from one part of the body (usually the abdomen, thighs, or flanks) and injected into another area to add volume, smooth contours, or improve skin quality. The fat is harvested with gentle liposuction, purified, and then carefully injected into the target area in small amounts to ensure natural-looking results and good survival of the fat cells.
This procedure is commonly used in the face (to restore volume in cheeks, under the eyes, lips, or to soften wrinkles), in the breasts (for natural enhancement or after reconstruction), and in the buttocks (Brazilian Butt Lift). It can also be used to fill scars, correct contour irregularities, or rejuvenate aging hands. Because it uses the patient’s own fat, the risk of allergic reaction or rejection is very low.
